Common questions about DEA Member Benefits

Divorce?

Upon a divorce your ex-spouse must be removed from the benefits immediately as they are no longer entitled to benefits. If they are not removed and there is usage after the date of divorce you will be responsible for any payment made on their behalf.

Do you cover Baby Formula?

No baby formula is considered a food supplement, and our Prescription Plan only covers medications. You can try through your medical carrier for coverage, or it would be out of your pocket.

Lifestyle Medications?

Medications categorized as Lifestyle medications are NOT covered through the DEA benefits. You can try through your medical plan or the would be out of your pocket.

EX; Weight Loss Dugs, Stop Smoking Medications, Birth Control, Erectile Dysfunction, etc.

What Benefits are handled through the DEA?

The DEA handles your Prescription Drugs, Dental and Optical. Your Medical Insurance is handled through City Health Benefits Active 646-610-5122 or Retired 212-513-0470.

What is Student Verification?

Student Verification is required for children ages 19-23.

You must submit verification every Spring (Mar 1- Aug 31) and Fall (Sept1- Feb 28) semesters.

Please note if your child’s 19th birthday falls in between a semester you must submit for that semester for there to be no break in coverage.

Please note if your child turns 23 or stops attending school on or before their 23rd birthday they are eligible COBRA benefits for a fee. Please reach out to the DEA Health Benefits Office to inquire.

Where can I find my DEA ID#?

Your unique DEA id# can be located on your prescription or dental cards and is used in place of your Social Security Number.

Who covers vaccinations?

Vaccinations are covered under the medical plans as preventative for all non-Medicare eligible members.

Upon going on to Medicare vaccinations are either covered under Medicare part B or out of your pocket.
